Mary Waagen named Unison Bank Artist of the Month

Mary's Eggs display at Unison Bank

Unison Bank announced Mary Waagen from Mary’s Eggs as its featured artist for April 2024.

Each month, Unison Bank features local artists, photographers, quilters and creators and their products or services. Since 2013, they have featured 114 artisans.

April’s featured artist, Mary Waagen, has displayed a her pysanky eggs within the lobby of Unison Bank in Jamestown, N.D.

“The art of Pysanky comes from the Eastern European regions of Poland, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, Bohemia and portions of Russia,” said Waagen. “I am half Polish and half Bohemian, so creating Pysanky is an extension of my heritage.”

Finding inspiration from flowers, floor tiles and even quilt work, Mary enjoys the intricate process of creating her eggs. “You start with a plain white egg and say a prayer over it, asking God to bless your efforts and the recipient of the egg with the attributes depicted on the egg. Then, you draw the design using beeswax and go through a series of dyes. In the end, you have an egg that is covered with wax and you won’t see the actual design until all the wax is melted off.  Melting the wax off is like opening a gift every time!”

Mary’s eggs can be purchased at the ND Heritage Center & Museum Gift Shop in Bismarck, as well as at www.maryseggs.net.

“We’re honored to allow local artists the opportunity to display their unique talents,” said Unison Bank President & CEO, Kelly Rachel. “Our doors are open, and we invite the community to stop by and see what these artists have to offer.”
